One of the most important and well-built Jain pilgrimage spot in Jabalpur, Pisanhari ki Madhiya is situated besides the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College of Jabalpur at Jabalpur Nagpur road 6 kilometers from Kamania gate. It is world famous among Jain community and others as Madhiyaji and Pisanhari ki Madhiya.

It has its roots located right in the age dating back to 500 years back and that; it was built by a God-loving woman. This woman was very poor but was inspired by the preaching of a Jain monk but her name is still unknown to the current society. She earned very little in the work of grinding wheat flour door to door but she was dedicated and sincere enough to earn more and more. She worked hardly and earned sufficient money in order to start the construction.

Some of the villagers helped a lot in building the temple but she was left with not a penny. She decided to place two stones of the wheat flour instead of the golden pots, for which she has no money, at the top of the temple.

Those stones still have significance in the eyes of the visitors and then, the temple was named “Pisanhari ki Madhiya”, depending on the work of that special woman, grinding wheat flour with hand-operated stone mill. Acting as the most renowned Digambar Jain pilgrimage, Pisanhari Ki Madhiya is still a place of natural scenery, meditation spot and many different rituals among Jain’s of the whole world. Acharya Shri Vidya Sagar Ji has visited this palace so many times. Nandishwar Deep is also situated here which was built a few years ago. Inside it you can see Panchmeru temple.

In the Vedic dharma-we not only know the place of worship under a tree, but also there is the cult of some particular tree is purified. Pippala (banyan), Bael, and Tulasi are some of the many trees that revered by followers of the Vedas.

The tree is no more than places or other natural elements. Respect the Vedas to the tree is to consider several things. The tree is a living thing. That means he has a jiva or atma. The tree is a person, an individual. Trees also are home to so many lives. He has an important role in giving life to other creatures and also provides protection. In one tree, let alone the more he grows, there will be lots of creatures who depend on it. We also believe, certain forms of life that cannot be seen by physical eyes can only consider the tree as his home. There are so many jiva who dwells there. Trees are also symbols. He can serve as an emblem that reminds us of the Source of All Things. Seeing a particular tree can make us remember the Lord, the Lord of Truth throughout the universe.

First we see the tree as one part of the diversity of the universe. He is one of the elements of nature. There is no place on this entire cosmic manifestation that is not permeated by the presence of God. Lord as Paramatma even in the smallest atom. So it is not wrong if some people or some groups of people, who have a sense of closeness with nature, instead find God in the trees. They make a tree that was selected as a place they do worship, express gratitude, or expression of other feelings to God under a tree. In this understanding, what difference does a tree with the building of concrete, of course not? This is just a place where we can pour out our feelings. Many people are still going out under a tree, but already there are cafes, fancy restaurants, etc. So it's not a problem if some people establish a love of the Almighty God under a tree, yet the whole place in this universe belongs to Him. We must also remember how great the benefits of trees for us. Regulation of water, clean air, food, clothing, and shelter us, all done by the plants. These trees are the gift of God is so great to us all. Does it shade of a tree we may regard as one of the best places to glorify God?

The second understanding is that we Hindus see the tree as the indwelling of so many living things. If we belong to India, Bali, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar and other places that still hold to the tradition of Dharma, we will see so many small altars under the big trees. Lay people just say its haunted tree. But the real sense is that there are life forms that dwell in the tree. Man is a trespasser (offenders). We often violated in every way, intentionally or unintentionally. With the high individualism nowadays, even if we go in the yard one could have mugged by a rifle. This is prevalent in Western countries, but probably not as sharp as that in India. But to live our many residential areas violated various other living creatures. In the olden days when people made a village in forest; a large banyan tree planted or intentionally left in the middle of the village. The villages in India and Bali also have a pattern like this. Then the banyan tree becomes the center of the village. There, residents set up a small altar and make offerings of food, and others. Why is that? We believe that so many creatures live in trees. When we cut down trees for our purposes, so many are homeless. We must cut down just enough, to really pay attention to their effect on the environment, whether visible or not. So we try to always remember, that for the facilities we enjoy, many creatures that disturb our pleasure and we break the region. The founder of the village elders, for example, then let all the creatures that dwell in the trees to be in the center of the village. Humans take him as an integral part of community life. Every day we express our gratitude by giving a bit of nature that we enjoy in the form of simple offerings. Every generation that lived in the village have to remember, that they could stay there thanks to the willingness of others to share their homes. We certainly cannot prove scientifically, whether it is true there are things like spirits who became residents of the tree and so on. Do they really want and can eat offerings. We cannot be sure. But an ant was useful for us, so we also need to thank them; the fact that the ants would get food from the rest of our offerings. At least a good mental attitude we develop. The mind accustomed to thank you, to always seek a harmonious life together, to always remember that man does not live alone and are not able to live alone.

The third understanding is that we see that in the Vedas there is respect for certain trees. Plants are sanctified by the Hindus, among others, Tulasi, Bael (Bilva) and Pippala. Here the trees are respected as an individual, a special person. For example, Tulasi especially revered as a manifestation of Vrinda-devi by the Vaishnava. Tulasi is the plant that is dear God Almighty Sriman Narayana. Every part of this plant is absolutely necessary in any kind of worship of Sriman Narayana. Its leaves and flowers used for garlands are offered to God. The wood is submerged in the cotton oil lamps are used for offerings to God. Also when grinded into a paste, it can be used as conditioning or also can be dedicated to the Lord. Each Yajna and worship is incomplete without its presence. Tulasi is stated ideal for a devotee who loves God with all his soul. Every part of Tulasi is an offering to God. Its life is simply to glorify Sriman Narayana in this world. Could we get another good example of Tulasi in worshiping God? Even just by being around him and saw him, immediately reminded of a Hindu idol Sriman Narayana. That's why all traditional Hindu families usually keeps Tulasi plant in their house and worship it every day. Tulasi also be classified as tadiya. This is a term used to express all the things associated with God. All of Bhakti in the Hindu tradition states that this tadiya also be revered, because it would confer bhakti cult is growing in the Lord. Therefore, we also know the habits of separating all of the tools used for the puja (kumbhan, vattil, plates, vastram, Ganta, tripada, etc.), with the tools that we use for ourselves. These tools are sanctified, even honored in such a way, because his presence declared the presence of God. Trees that have a special relationship with our worship to God, like Tulasi, Bilva, and Pippala, are also respected and revered as special individuals.

The fourth understanding is that the tree itself is a symbol of God, even the image of God Himself. In the Vedas, the image of God can be realized with Sila (stone) as Salagramam, painting such as Yantra, Mandala and also wood. God in the timber specified by Taittiriya-Upanishad (10.12) adau yaddaro plavate sindho pare apaurusam Tada ravasva durdano yahi parasparam Tena. This image of God, is the Absolute Truth in a timber, which formed by no mortal hand, floats on the ocean. By worship him, the presence of the highest and most recent perfection can be achieved. Absolute Truth in a timber is described in the Puranas and Itihasa as Daru-brahman, who is now well-regarded in Jagannath Puri in Orissa, eastern India. Daru-brahman comes in three being known as Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra. The Vedanti understand him as the embodiment of Ananda (Bliss Supreme), Cit (Supreme Consciousness) and the Sun (or the Imperishable Supreme Reality). They are the Hindu Trimurti, Vishnu, Rudra and Brahma, as well as the Adi-parasakti. The Tantriks worship him as Adi Bhairava, Uttara-sadhaka, and Uttara-sadhika. The festival is been celebrated by Hindu’s in almost all parts of India and all over the world where Hindus live; in different forms but all mark their tribute to the power in its feminine form. The story says that Goddess Durga had fought for nine days against the demon ‘Mahishashura’ and had overpowered him on the tenth day. Thus the period marks a symbolic victory of the Chaitanya or divine consciousness over the evil energy. The Garbo or the earthen pot with a hole to lit a lamp literally means ‘The Womb’ symbolizes the Divine’s energy against all evils.

The rituals starts on the first day called Pratipada of the Hindu calendar month Ashwin being a bright fortnight of the month by the installing a pot, this procedure is called ‘Ghatasthapana’ and a lamp is lit for nine days and nights continuously. The festival not only characterizes devotion, fasting and worship is also associated with ‘Rasa’ and ‘Garba’ the dance forms performed by the masses with complete religious rites. The Rasa helds with connection to Lord Krishna and is essentially with harvesting of the crops.

Garba, the very thought of this dance form brings vivid and bright memories of cheerful groups of people dressed in traditional attires glittering and colorful ambience, exciting and fun. Peoples from different walks of life, irrespective of caste or age comes together to perform on melodious and auspicious songs of worship. Probably this is the only festival in the world which lasts so long and on such grand scale. The Garba is played by moving in circle executing simple steps and claps with hand while the Rasa Garba is played with sticks along with partners again moving in circle around the ‘Garbo’; the pot lit with a lamp installed in the centre. Garba being an original folk dance from Gujarat, India has crossed its boundaries to become a popular dance of India drawing attention from around the globe.

These nine days of festivity and devotion are filled with lots of joy especially for the youth who dress up in colorful attires, Chania-choli for girls and Kediyu for boys accompanied with traditional ornaments. The dance form is performed in cycles where dancers are in rings, the dance symbolizes that the Shakti in its feminine form is the only thing which is unmoved and unchanged in this ever-changing universe. Ahmedabad and Vadodara are renowned for their grandness and are centers of attraction for the Garba lovers.

In Bengal this period is celebrated as Durga Puja, being the biggest festival. Idols of Goddess Durga in life-sizes are installed with all the decoration and exquisite craftsmanship. This Puja lasts for 9 days and ends with the immersion of the idols in the Hugli or other river.

The celebrations end on the tenth day, Vijayadashmi or Dusshera, as a mark of Durga’s victory over evil and also Victory of Shree Ram over Ravana; the victory of the Chaitanya over the evils prevailing in the universe.
